Parental chat monitoring on a child's Android phone

Kid Security can help parents review supported incoming messages captured from notifications when their child uses an Android phone. It does not provide full access to a child's chats, and outgoing messages are not shown.

When a clear conversation matters more than assumptions

A message has left you concerned

Use the available information as a reason to check in calmly, not as a substitute for listening to your child.

You are setting family rules for messaging apps

Agree together on what support looks like and what each person can expect from the app.

You want to understand the limits first

Check the child's device and the notification-based scope before you decide whether the feature fits your family.

Your child needs a trusted adult to talk to

Make it clear that they can bring worrying messages to you without being blamed for asking for help.

You are reviewing digital-safety settings together

What parents can see and what stays outside the feature

Chat monitoring is limited to supported incoming messages that the child's Android phone has shown in push notifications. The result depends on what was captured in the notification.

Supported incoming notifications

For supported messengers, the parent can view incoming message content captured from a push notification.

Not a complete chat history

The parent does not see a complete conversation history, and outgoing messages are not shown.

Deleted after a notification

A message may still be available if it was captured from a notification before it was deleted on the child's phone.

A reason to talk

Use a worrying message as a reason to ask, listen and agree what to do next.

Talk with your child before you enable the feature. Explain that it is limited to supported incoming notifications on an Android phone, agree what you will do if something worries you, and leave room for them to ask for help.

  • What stays private: Outgoing messages, and anything that did not appear in a notification, stay outside the feature.
  • What to agree first: Decide together whom your child can contact when a message feels worrying or confusing.

Privacy and contact settings in a messenger are worth reviewing together. They do not replace a calm conversation when a message feels worrying. Kid Security has a different, limited role: when the child’s phone uses Android, a parent can review supported incoming content captured from notifications.

  • Messenger settings: WhatsApp now offers parent-managed accounts for younger children: a parent decides who can contact the account and which groups it can join. The chats themselves stay end-to-end encrypted, so the parent does not see them.
  • What this feature adds: On a child’s Android phone, Kid Security shows the parent incoming messages from supported messengers, as they appeared in notifications.
  • What matters next: Use a worrying message as a reason to listen and agree what to do next together.

A parent can use Kid Security on Android or iOS when the child’s phone uses Android. Chat monitoring is not available when the child uses iOS, including iPhone or iPad.

Questions parents ask before enabling chat monitoring

What does chat monitoring show a parent?

When the child uses an Android phone, Kid Security shows incoming messages from supported messengers as they appeared in push notifications. It is not full access to the child’s chats, and outgoing messages are not shown.

Can I see every message on my child’s phone?

No. Chat monitoring covers only incoming content that the child’s Android phone displayed in a supported push notification. It is not a complete conversation history, and anything that did not appear in a notification stays outside the feature.

Which parental-control options can help a parent manage a child’s WhatsApp use?

Two options work together. WhatsApp's own parent-managed accounts for younger children let a parent decide who can contact the account and which groups it can join; the chats stay end-to-end encrypted. Kid Security adds a different layer when the child uses Android: it shows supported incoming WhatsApp messages as they appeared in notifications. Outgoing messages are not shown, and this is not full access to the child's chats.

Can I use chat monitoring when I have an iPhone or iPad?

Yes, when the child uses Android. A parent can use Kid Security on Android or iOS, but chat monitoring depends on the child’s phone using Android.

Does chat monitoring work when my child has an iPhone or iPad?

No. Chat monitoring is not available when the child uses iOS, including iPhone or iPad.

Which messengers are supported?

The supported messengers are WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram Direct, Viber and Facebook Messenger. Snapchat, TikTok, Discord and SMS are not supported.

Can I see a message after my child deletes it?

A message may still be available only if it was captured from a push notification before it was deleted on the child's phone. The feature does not promise that every deleted message will be available.

Can I use chat monitoring for free?

In the free version, the latest displayed chat is available for each supported messenger when the child uses Android. Check the child’s device and the supported-messenger list first.

How should our family use chat monitoring responsibly?

Talk with your child before you enable it. Explain the Android-device condition and notification-based limits, agree how you will respond to a worrying message, and make it clear that asking for help will not lead to blame.

When a message worries you, start with calm

Ask what happened before you draw conclusions.

Listen without blaming your child for receiving a message.

Look at the relevant information together, rather than assuming the feature shows every message.

Agree what to do next in the messenger and who the child can ask for help.

Keep the conversation open so that the child can come back if they feel worried again.

On most days, chat monitoring should not be the centre of family life. Its value is in helping you understand the limited information available from supported incoming notifications on an Android phone, then speak calmly when something needs attention.

Your child’s conversations are not a report for a parent to read line by line. Check the device condition, understand the notification-based limits and agree together what support looks like when a message feels worrying.

  • Works when the child uses Android
  • Covers supported incoming notification content only
  • Shows the latest displayed chat for each supported messenger in the free version
  • Supports a calm family conversation, not hidden control
